My Artist Statement
I draw and paint on paper, canvas and wood.
sculpt in stone, collage with shredded paper, cardboard, fabric.
My focus is the human figure, both nude and clothed, within their landscape - I often work in natural light, in a garden setting. Years ago, I worked in a huge abandoned chicken coup Feathers in my hair and chicken droppings at my feet, I painted large figures on wood.
Three cultural pivots form my base:
Judaism - by birth
Zionism - by belief
First Nation - by location
My experiences as a Canadian by birth, Israeli by choice - fuel my narrative.
Past memory is constant - it empowers the reality I shape.
PICASSO
I admire his courage to record the emotional intensity of woman, Confusing distortions release ambiguities. Faces become almost mask-like, however ever dynamic. Picasso reduces and expands the face and figure. Some portraits are self-erasing, others praise.
I want to reach this level - to project the fierceness of woman.
There is something staggering about the message Picasso and Chicago send to me.
JUDY CHICAGO
Her birth and creation images urge me to dare to ask: Would God be a female?
I want women to rise, as does Judy.
She is both provocative and kind with her grand focus on female genitalia. But I want more. I want to discover both the men and women I paint. In my world, both exist, both have huge presence. I want to bring both their stories to the surface.
I believe the narrative is essential, although twisted.
My journey continues.
